DJX’s New Work: A “Redefinition” of Hotel Standards in Chengdu, China
With its century-old service framework and operational logic, Wyndham Grand has set a quality benchmark globally. DJX Design redefines the value track with business insight, meeting the owner’s needs—no longer simply copying templates, but breaking through the system and establishing its own standards.
Focusing on high-end clientele seeking unique experiences and emotional resonance, DJX Design navigates away from the red ocean of homogenized competition. Building upon established international standards, it rethinks and redefines the essence of the hotel:
It pioneers international high-end hotels with narrative power and emotional connection, creating micro-vacation destinations deeply linked to the city with lasting storytelling potential. From the outset, it injects long-term brand identity and asset appreciation potential into the project, achieving the strategic leap from “following standards” to “defining standards.”
Invited by the Wyndham Group, DJX Design undertook the design and construction of this hotel, going beyond standard requirements. In this “park city” of “transparent blue, verdant green, silver city, and colorful city,” they created a contemporary place imbued with the city’s spirit and collective memory. The hotel’s completion has further ignited community vitality, and amidst this thriving energy, DJX Design has also completed an experiment in design transcendence within standardized frameworks.
1 Spatializing Brand DNA: A City-Inspired Geopoetics
Historians believe that the Chengdu Plain seems to have possessed a stabilizing mechanism since ancient times, giving rise to the city’s composed and unhurried character. This likely stems from the region’s abundant natural resources, further enhanced by the unique geographical position and natural barriers of the Sichuan Basin, nurturing Chengdu’s distinctive yet inclusive cultural tradition.
In Chengdu, a two-hour drive can take you from the city center on the alluvial plain to the base of the 5,000-meter-high Xiling Snow Mountain… Under such prerequisites, the Sichuan region has nurtured countless distinct lifestyles. This is Chengdu’s most valuable collective memory. Taking this as an opportunity, DJX Design transforms macro-geopolitical strategies into a tangible, walkable spatial narrative.
The typical model of old Western Sichuan residences is the “linpan” (forest farmstead), where farmhouses nestle within bamboo groves and trees. They feature through-joint timber frames, green tile roofs, and walls made of woven bamboo plastered with mud, covered with small blue-gray tiles. From a distance, the roofs undulate like grey waves. Adopting an integrated perspective combining “architecture, art, and interior,” DJX Design contemporaneously translates this cultural DNA. It’s not a symbolic copy, but an abstract representation using modern materials and construction techniques, weaving Chengdu’s collective memory into the overall spatial foundation. The design carefully controls the use and interpretation of tradition, creating a new world balanced between old and new.
2 A Field of Spiritual Energy: Memory, Time, Light
Entering the hotel lobby, the blend of simplicity and solidity presents a space of powerful composure and tranquility. The reception desk at the far end forms a semi-enclosed embrace with its curved surface. A golden light strip, extending from the facade material upward to the ceiling, becomes the focal point for visual and spiritual convergence. The entry process creates a strong sense of being guided.
The traditional method of laying small grey tiles involves “alternating upward and downward placements” to create a wavy texture. On-site, a grand array is achieved through the repeated staggered overlapping of modular structures. Simultaneously, light adds dynamism and mystery to all the order and sense of gravity. These tiles often symbolize time; over the years, they grow moss, change color, and grass grows and withers in the crevices, while the tiles remain silent. The arrayed facades enhance the experience of time, and within an infinite sense of constancy, sacred light descends from above.
The mosaic materials, through the diffuse reflection of light, display a silver radiance reminiscent of a starry night sky. Metal can pave a tunnel leading to the stars. Space can stretch imagination to vastly distant points on the timeline, offering boundless human experience. Charles Maier once said, “Nostalgia is to longing as kitsch is to art.” However, processed and reflected-upon nostalgia genuinely establishes a connection—between people and the city, the present and the distant past, the ordinary and the imagination—bridging them all.
3 Non-Linear Experience: Liking Details, Not Symbols
Entering the lounge and bar area, colors, scents, more textures, and the slowly emanating essence of the solid, rational, massive building begin to flow and soften. The woven bamboo and mud walls of Western Sichuan, resilient and coexisting with the land, are lightweight and breathable. Wood and metal recreate this texture, replacing temporality with stability.
In a relatively large-scale hotel space, this use of traditional imagery creates a profound rhythm. Whether the facades of the dining area or the functional partitions in public spaces, it dissolves any potential architectural aggressiveness, allowing people to immerse themselves freely and comfortably.
Colors and textures also come closer to the earth and mountains. These constructs are no longer mere structural elements or declarative symbols but serve as mediums for viewing, to be used, felt, and remembered.
Numerous abstract artworks carrying the city’s genetic code enrich the experiential density of the public spaces. Abstract lines, colors, material fibers, and recreated experimental art emphasize local identity, as well as the city’s openness to the future and all unknowns. A digital water curtain cascades from the ceiling, delivering both poetry and excitement simultaneously. Every detail is not an isolated aesthetic choice but serves the design goal of “creating experiences beyond existing perceptions.”
4 Anti-Smooth Aesthetics: Sharpening Points of Sensory Engagement
Beyond meeting standard dimensions, DJX Design believes guest rooms should carry more emotional weight and density, acting like “instruments for the senses.” Almost all rooms ensure a connection to the urban or natural landscape through windows. The meticulous detailing found in public areas carries over into the guest rooms.
If you examine every square meter of a guest room, you’ll find that the scale of everything—from the bed and lamp to the surface for placing items and the window welcoming sunlight—is precisely orchestrated. Function is refined to its essence, freeing the user’s body and eyes, ensuring guests feel neither bored nor restless.
The interior color palette subtly integrates with Chengdu: sand, misty white, grey-green. Fabrics and building materials are equally well-combined: linen, cotton, marble, leather envelop the guest, creating a sense of security and immediate relaxation—the design emphasizes comfort at an emotional level.
The customized sensory system represents the micro-level manifestation of “model innovation capability”: translating the strategic blueprint into every tangible, memorable moment of comfort. The stay is no longer a simple sum of standards but a unique journey where body and emotions are fully attended to. This constitutes the hotel’s core, and most difficult-to-replicate, competitive advantage.
5 The Blue Ocean of Value After Redefinition
This redefined Wyndham hotel has forged an irreplaceable connection with the city. DJX Design consciously embedded richer, denser information through the integrated design approach of “architecture, art, and interior,” thus endowing this hotel with greater potential.
It is not just a standardized international five-star hotel, but also a “heterogeneous field” for contemplation and rest—a destination to be remembered and experienced. The stay is no longer a simple transaction but an immersive narrative of self-exploration, urban perception, and energy transformation, where modern travel rituals intertwine with the enduring memories of the city and life.
During the execution phase, DJX Design adhered to a cost philosophy of “dare to give, not greedy, precise investment.” Through innovative engineering thinking and resource integration strategies, it precisely controlled costs, ensuring that every penny of the client’s investment was maximally converted into impressive “field” value, delivering returns beyond expectations.
DJX Design’s intervention allows Wyndham to resonate within the city through a new narrative, fulfilling the owner’s desire to “create its own standards” while, within the mature international framework, using design wisdom to shape an inimitable rarity—transforming a standardized proposition into long-term asset competitiveness and value appreciation space.

A true micro-vacation is not about physical distance but about creating a “parallel world” within the city that facilitates a complete transformation of physical and mental energy.
Zhonghong Chengdu Wyndham Hotel is a complete practice of this concept. Through DJX Design’s unique design language, we have shaped a field with powerful “suck-in” quality: from the lobby embodying “geopoetics” and carrying the city’s memory, to the public spaces imbued with timeless spirituality, to the guest rooms serving as “emotional vessels”—every space is designed to instantly detach people from their daily rhythm.
Here, the meaning of “stay” is redefined. What it offers is not just international-standard services, but a set of high-frequency, efficient “modern urban spiritual habitat solutions” carrying identity value. It elevates business travel or city leisure into a precious ritual of gaining inspiration, restoring vitality, and engaging in dialogue with the deeper cultural DNA of a city.

Project Description:
Beijing DJX Design, led by creative director Wang Bing, completed the new interior design for Zhonghong Wyndham Grand Hotel in Chengdu. This 27,000-square-meter space redefines the conventional luxury hotel model, weaving the cultural DNA of Chengdu into every architectural detail.
As an innovative project, the hotel aimed to create a replicable new standard for high-end hospitality rooted in authentic urban identity. The design draws on the “linpan” forest farmstead culture and the city’s unique geography as its spiritual core, with the rhythm of light, material, and narrative as its contextual thread. The lobby, with its serene solidity and soft golden lighting, acts as a threshold between daily life and a new realm of calm.
The main public zones use grey tile-inspired modular facades (echoing traditional Sichuan architecture) and earth-tone materials. Mosaic surfaces shimmer under subtle lighting, reflecting two visions of Chengdu: timeless and contemporary. Lounge and dining areas dissolve architectural rigidity with flowing forms and woven textures, evoking the lightness of bamboo and the resilience of mud walls.
A symbolic, narrative-driven design language unfolds across guest rooms and common spaces, using abstract art and custom details to carry the city’s memory. LED lighting, digital water features, and sensory-focused furnishings enhance the experience. The open layout and smooth circulation connect public areas, dining spaces, and guest suites, fostering a new sense of connection between travelers, the city, and their inner selves.
This design seamlessly integrates brand identity, cultural connotation, and practical functionality, presenting a unique space that redefines the essence of luxury hospitality in Chengdu.
