Sarasota High School Building, 2155 Bahia Vista St, Sarasota, FL 34239

Sarasota High School is a public high school of the Sarasota County Public Schools in Sarasota, Florida, a city by the Gulf of Mexico.

The current campus, consisting of two buildings — a 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) mid-century building by Paul Rudolph added in 1958-1959 (pictured), and a 60,000-square-foot (5,600 m2) 1926 Collegiate Gothic structure designed by M. Leo Elliott.

In 1996, the school expanded to its current size of 85 acres (0.34 km2), and classes began to move out of the old Sarasota High building. The adaptive reuse project by Lawson Group Architects transformed the building into the Ringling College Museum.

In 1958, American architect Paul Rudolph was commissioned to design an expansion for Sarasota High School, complementing the existing Collegiate Gothic campus with a distinctly modern architectural language. In contrast to the steel-framed complex he had recently completed at Riverview High School, Rudolph conceived the addition as a dynamic composition of folded concrete planes. The design employed a system of horizontal slabs and vertical piers tailored to Sarasota’s subtropical climate, promoting natural ventilation by organising classrooms along an open-air circulation spine. The project earned Rudolph national recognition, receiving an Award of Merit from the American Institute of Architects’ Honor Awards Program in 1962.

The future of the building came under threat in 2008 when the Sarasota County School Board voted to demolish Rudolph’s nearby Riverview High School. Amid growing concern over the preservation of his architectural legacy, the board pledged to “appropriately rehabilitate” the Sarasota High School addition. However, plans unveiled in 2012 proposed extensive alterations to the structure, prompting the Sarasota Architectural Foundation to launch a campaign advocating for a more sensitive restoration approach. Later that year, the Paul Rudolph addition was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognising its architectural and cultural significance.

Completed in 2015, the adaptive reuse project was led by Harvard Jolly Architecture and Jonathan Parks AIA. After serving as classrooms for more than five decades, the building was transformed into the administrative heart of the campus and its principal public entrance. A carefully considered new gateway acknowledges the historic character of Rudolph’s design while expressing a contemporary identity. The revitalised building has since received widespread acclaim, earning multiple honours, including an award from AIA Florida in 2016 and recognition in Docomomo’s Modernism in America Awards in 2021.

Addressing a long-standing campus planning challenge of expansive parking lots and inactive building frontages along the public boulevard, the design introduces an organically curving stone and bronze wall that redefines the institution’s presence and identity at the street edge.
The sculptural form extends outward like welcoming arms, embracing visitors while shaping a generous landscaped lawn that establishes a memorable and inviting arrival experience. Beyond creating a stronger visual identity, the intervention organizes circulation and clearly defines a legible point of campus entry.
Through the integration of landscape, architecture, and public space, the project transforms what was once a fragmented and utilitarian edge condition into a cohesive civic frontage—one that enhances accessibility, strengthens campus character, and fosters a more engaging relationship with the surrounding urban environment.
